HAMPDEN RACES.

The Hampden Racing Club held their annual meeting yesterday. There was not a large attendance. Heavy rain fell during the day, which greatly marred the success of the meeting. A fotalisator was in full work on the ground, and was well patronised. Mr H. J. Baker as judge, Mr Alex. Robb as starter, and Mr J. Cullinane as secretary, gave general satisfaction. Appended are the results of the various events : — HANDICAP HURDLE RACE Of 15 soys; distance 2 miles, over 6 flights of hurdles 3ft 6in high. Mr O'Connor'sTui, list 21b (Taylor) 1 MrHopkinson'sWainui, list (Owner) 0 Mr Mason's Chance, lOst 101b (Warren) 0 A good start was effected, Chance leading. Wainui baulked at tbe second hurdle and was afterwards out of the race. Chance still kept the lead, and looked all over a winner, until he reached the last hurdle, which he ran round. Tui, coming up fast, safely negotiated the jump, and won easily. No second horse was placed. A Hack Hurdle Race, post entrance, was the next event on the cards, but there being no entries the race lapsed. MAIDEN PLATE Of 10 soys, distance 1} miles, weight 9st. Mr Pettit's Ranter (J Brinson) ... 1 Mr Ellingham'B Tommy Dodd (A. Ellingbam) 2 Mr Anderson's Maggie May (J Ingram) 3 Tommy Dodd and Maggie May went off with a splendid start. On passing the post for the first time Ranter took the lead, which he kept, "eventually winning easily, Maggie May and Tommy Dodd running a good race for second place. HAMPDEN STAKES HANDICAr, Of 20 soys, distance 2 miles. Mr Reihana's Kuui, 7st (Lagour) ... 1 Mr Ingram's Lady Dolly, 6_t 71b (Owner) ... " 2 Mr Ward's Mermaid, 6sf (Taylor) ... 3 Savannah also started. A good start was effected, Lady Dolly taking the lead, Kuui last. Savannah was beaten after going a mile. At the finish Kuni drew away and won easily, Lady Dolly beating Mermaid by about half-a-length for second place. DISTRICT RACE, Of 10 sovs,~ distance l_ miles, weight 9st. Mr Ingram's Lady Dolly (Owner) ... 1 Mr Ward's Mermaid (A. Ellingbam) 2 Mr Mason's Chance f Atkins) ... 3 Chance made the running for threequarters of a mile, when he broke down. Lady Dolly then took the lead, and won easily from the second horse, Mermaid. CONSOLATION HANDICAP, Of 7 soys, distance 1 mile. Mr Pettit's Savannah 1 Mr Anderson's Maggie May... ... 2 These were the only starters, Savannah winuing easily in a canter. HACK RACE. Tomboy 1 Four other horses started.
