MELBOURNE.

December 7. The steamship Rotomahana was successfully floated this afternoon. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (limited) report that at their wool sale to-day 2275 bales were oftered. Competition was very brisk, fine cross-breds being decidedly firmer in response to the tone of the London auctions, and fine wools generally were in very good demand. Two thousand bales were sold at satisfactory prices.

In the Legislative Assembly this evening Mr Munro asked that precedence might be given to a motion which he had placed upon the order paper for the appointment of a select committee of seven to investigate the railway administration of the colony. Sir B. O'Loghlen declined to grant precedence to the motion. Mr Munro, however, insisted on precedence being granted, and h≥ was warmly supported by Mr Berry. The Premier thereupon stated that the Government considered the motion as tantamoußt to a vote of want of confidence, and moved the adjournment of the House until Tuesday next. At 10 o'clock the discussion was still proceeding, the general feeling of the House being adverse to a vote of want of confidence. December 8. At a later period of last night's sitting in the Legislative Assembly the adjournment ot the House was carried, and Mr Munro'e motion for the appointment of a select committee to investigate the railway administration will be treated as a vote of want of confidence in the Government. Much angry altercation occurred during last night's debate. The Government have announced that a board will be appointed to assess the amount of compensation to be awarded to tbe sufferers by the Hawthorn railway accident.
