CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

Tbe ordinary quarterly meeting of the Napier Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon, Mr J. G. Kinross in the chair.

A report was received from the committee detailing what had been done since last meeting, and Mr Miller explained that the matter concerning Ellman's route to Taupo was being throughly investigated. With respect to a communication from the Hawke's Bay County Council, informing the Chamber that all roads south of Mohaka to Napier had been excluded from the list of roads coming within the provisions of the Roads and Bridges Construction Act, it was resolved, after some discussion, that the County Councils of Hawke's Bay and Wairoa be written to, asking them to move the Government to have surveyed, and placed on the schedule of the Roads and Bridges Construction Bill, the road known as Rochfort's line, to a junction with the proposed deviation of the Taupo line now being surveyed by Mr Kennedy. Mr Miller moved, and Mr Ljndon seconded, "That this Chamber views with satisfaction the efforts now being made by the Wairoa Harbor Board to carry out the plans prepared by Mr Stewart, C.E., for the improvement of the river channel, and cutting open the entrance at the bar, and, seeing that the ratepayers of the Wairoa County have come forward so promptly in offering to tax themselves to pay the interest on half the cost of the works, this Chamber supports the memorial sent to the Government by the Wairoa Harbor Board, asking assistance to the extent of the other half of the amount required, and that there is good ground for this assistance being given from tbe fact that the Crown possesses over 300,000 acres in the district, the value of which would be materially enhanced by the improvement ot the Wairoa river."—Considerable discussion ensued, the majority of those present expressing disapproval of the motion, and ultimately it was agreed, on the motion of Mr Large, that the matter be referred to the committee.

On the representation of the secretary, that the charge for storage at the port of Napier was more than double that of any other port in the colony, it was unanimously resolved to aak the Harbor Board to reconsider the scale of charges. The remaining business was unimportant.
