The weather was fine and bright until 3 p.m., when the wind changed to the - southward, and brought down a pelting rain, putting a stop to the firing. Mr J. L. Gillies, of Dunedin, and Mr Fergus, M.H.R., fired a rifle match. The conditions were 200, 500, and 600 yards ; standing at the former, and kneeling at the remainder. The match, which was for a £5 5s trophy, was won by Mr Fergus, and he immediately presented hia trophy to the Rifle Association.
The rifle trophy was won by Corporal Brooks, of the North Dunedin Rifles, with a good score of 76. The other scores were— Paynter, Nelson, 73 ; Willocks, Clutha, 73; Coventry, Dunedin, 72; Harding, Oamaru, 68; Churton, Wanganui, 66 ; G. The carbine trophy match was woo by Lieutenant Ross, of Napier, who scored 78. The other scores were —F. The Carbine Challenge Match was finished this morning, with the following results :—• Thames Navals, 360 ; Wellington Artillery, 343; Wellington Navals, 342; Wairoa Light Horse, 336. The highest team take the Carbine Cup and £40, the second £20, the third £10, and the fourth £4.
Tbis afternoon has been proclaimed a holiday on the occasion of deciding the championship.
A'very cold southerly wind is blowing across the range, accompanied with occasional showers of rain, however not sufficient to stop the shooting. Some delay was caused throught the competitors not turning up at the appointed time.
