NEW PLYMOUTH.

November 8.

The Supreme Court was occupied the whole of yesterday with the trial of Antonio Schnell, charged with having murdered Mathew Knolls al Stratford. Mr Covett appeared for the prisoner, who, when called upon to plead, said : — " I have murdered him, but it was the fault of a dream." This was taken as a plea of not guilty, and the trial was proceeded with. Tbe medical evidence of Dr. Burn, of Nelson, was to the effect that the prisoner was of sound mind during the time he was in the Nelson asylum. The jury retired at 5 o'clock to consider their verdict, and returned into Court at 7 o'clock with a verdict of guijty. The Judge in passing sentence of death, said he agreed with the verdict upon the facts, but in his own mind he had doubts about the prisoner's sanity at the time the prisoner did tbe deed, and he should represent those doubts to the proper quarter.
