DUNEDIN.

November 6

An important commercial decision was given by Judge Williams in Banco today. Prior to 1879, if a debtor was adjudicated a bankrupt on a creditor's petition, the title of a trustee related back to any Act of bankruptcy for which the debtor was capable of being adjudicated a bankrupt. In the session of 1879 Mr W. D. Stewart obtained an amendment of the Bankruptcy Act by which the title of a trustee, when a debtor filed a declaration of insolvency, related back in the same manner as if a debtor had been adjudicated a bankrupt on a creditor's petition. Mr Dennieton, for the holder of a bill of sale in the case under notice, contended that the Act had not this effect, but Judge Williams holds a contrary view. It is understood that the Chief Justice and Judge Richmond hold the same view as Judge Williams.

During a gale on October 9 the barque Nearnes had one of her seamen washed overboard. The sea was mountains high at the time, and it was impossible to render any assistance. At the monthly meeting of the Council of the Trades and Labor League the secretary was directed to forward the following resolutions to the Dunedin and suburban members of the House of Representatives : — (!.) '" That this Council gratefully acknowledge the efforts of all those members of the Legislature during the past session of Parliament who have manifested such an interest in the prosperity of the working class as to vote for all liberal measures calculated to improve their condition. (2.) That this Council specially acknowledge the services of Messrs Green, Bracken, Fish, Bathgate, and Barron, in endeavoring to pass into law the various measures set forth in the Council's political programme."
