Ouk telegram from Gisborne states that it has been decided to call for tenders in England (or the supply of plant and machinery for lighting the town of Gisborne with electricity. From our Poverty Bay exchanges we learn that a meeting waa held on the 3lst ultimo to consider the subject. Owing to the progress made in lighting by means of electricity the idea of forming a Gas Company had been allowed to rest, and Mr W. Clarke has been engaged in estimating the cost of electrical lighting. He now estimated the cost of all the plant and appliances necessary to supply 1000 lights at £3500. He suggested that a tender for the supply of the plant be obtained from England. The gentlemen present fully concurred in tbe idea, and were unanimously of opinion that the time had arrived when something should be done to provide for the better lighting of the town. Mr .\dair said that it was high time that some improvement was made in the lighting of the borough. Should they not be able to obtain the electric light he thought they should still bold on to the idea of the Gas Company. After some further conversation it was resolved tbat a letter be written to the Borough Council asking whether that body has any intention of lighting the town, and if not, whether they will grant the concession so to do to a Company. It was then agree:! that in the event of the Borough Council declining to light the town a committee consisting of Messrs Clarke, Adair, and Maude be appointed to have a plan prepared showing all the tenements and the probable number of lights required, and to transmit to England with the view of obtaining tenders as to the cost of all necessary plant delivered in the Poverty Bay roadstead. Tenderers to agree to send out with the machinery one skilled man under engagement for a term of three years at a salary not to exceed £300 a year.
