(by cable.) Melbourne, October 30. The first day of the Victorian Racing Club's meeting opened fine but cold, and with a strong wind blowing. Notwithstanding this there was an immense attendance in the afternoon. The Governor was absent owing to tbe death of tbe Dowager Marchioness. The Maribynong Plate was won easily by Narina, the favorite. The finish of tbe Derby was most exciting, and when Navigator, who was tbe choice of tbe public, was declared the winner there was great cheering, the victory being most popular. MELBOURNE STAKES. Darebin 1 Belmont 2 Larpent ... ... ... 3 Ten horses started. Darebin led all tbe way, and won hard held. 1 ime, 2 mins. 13 sees The betting waa even money on Darebin. MABIBYNOHG. The field were well together at the carriage paddock, when Narina shot out and won comfortably by a length. Time, 1 mm. 4£ sees. HOTHAM HANDICAP. Odd Trick 1 Sardonyx 2 Commotion 3 —Thirteen horses started. Betting was 4 to 1 agst First Water, 5 to 1 agst Albyn, and 16 to 1 agst Odd Trick, but the last named won comfortably. Time, 2min 57fsecs. VICTORIAN DERBY. One mile and a half. Navigator ... ... ... 1 Frying Pan ... 2 Segenboe ... ... ... 3 —The following horses started :—Aide-de-camp, Boolka, Calma, Frying Pan, Transferred, King of the Vale, Standard | Bearer, Guesswork, and Navigator. The betting on the post was even on Navigator, 4 to 1 agst Segenboe, 6 to 1 agst Guesswork, 8 to 1 agst Boolka, and 10 to 20 to 1 agst others. On the fall of the flag Guesswork immediately went to the front, Transferred and Calma following. Along the river side Guesswork and Transferred were six lengths ahead of Calma, who led Boolka by half-a-lengtb. They ran in this order to the home turn, where Segenboe and Frying Pan looked dangerous, but Navigator came up with wet sail and won comfortably. Time, 2min 41£secs. The ring has been hit very hard in consequence of Navigator t ha"7ing been freely takeD in the double event with every horse which has a chance for the Cup. There is little betting, both the ring and the public waiting for hedging money. The latest betting on the Cup is : — Sweet William, 4 to 1 ; Little Jack, 7 to 1 ; Mistaken, 8 to 1 ; Sting, 10 to 1 ; Cunnamulla, 12 to 1 ; the others, 20 to 1.
