At theß. M. Court yesterday, Herman Hempton waa charged with forging and uttering five promissory notes, namely, one for £73 12s, purporting to be signed by James Martin, and discounted by Hyman Marks; one for £248 16s, also signed by James Martin, and discounted by the Bank of New Zealand; one for £196, signed by Arthur Empson, and discounted by the Bank of New Zealand ; one for £150, signed by J. A. Harman, and discounted by the Bank of New Zealand ; one for £14G, signed by Arthur Empson, but not discounted. The witnesses examined were the parties whose names bad been forged, the bill clerk of the Bank of New Zealand, the teller of
the National Bank, the arresting constable, and Hyain Marks. Hempton, who was undefended, stated that he was about to give himself up when arrested. He was committed for trial on the five charges. On a northern run it has been discovered that the wild pigs are very destructive to the lambs. One boar that was killed and opened contained no less than twenty lambs' feet, and another also showed that it had been feeding on that delicate dish. A man named C. P. Williams, who came from England a year ago, waa killed on Wednesday by a fall from a horse on a farm where he was learning his trade. The Shipping Company have fixed |d and fd as the rates for wool freight.
