Our Wairoa correspondent's letter, and a description of the new Catholic Church at Wairoa and the opening ceremony in connection therewith, appear on our fourth page to-day. Wo are requested to acknowledge receipts of the following sums towards the Jack relief fund : —James Marshall, junr., £1; C. Gallaghar, 10s. We are requested to state that, owing to the fancy fair being held in the Theatre, there will be no meeting of the Clive Square Mutual Improvement Association to-night. The Civil Service examinations commenced yesterday, and will be continued till Friday evening. There are five candidates, three for the junior grade and two for the senior. The examinations are being conducted under the supervision of the Registrar of the Supreme Court. We are requested to state that Messrs Banner and Liddle'a opening pale of skins, hides, &c, will be held at their .tores, Port Ahuriri, to-morrow at 2 o'clock, and we are given to understand that there are about 800 skins catalogued, besides a number of hides, and a quantity of tallow. In the course of hia address at Hastings last night Mr Sutton offered to supply any of his constituents, who would forward to him their names, with free copies of Hansard during the coming session, in order that they might keep themselves thoroughly posted in the work being done in the House. In the Resident Magistrate's Court today, before T. K. Newton, Esq., J.P., and E. Patten, Esq., J.P., James Ferguson, for being drunk at Taradale, was fined 5s and costs. There was only one civil case adjudicated upon, namely, William Irving v. Robert Sporle, a claim for £1 for goods, and judgment went by default, with costs loh, and counsel's fee 10s 6d. Mr Lee appeared for the plaintiff. There is nearly always a stagnant pool at the head of the drain at Messrs Combs and Co.'s corner. Messrs Newton and Co.'s corner opposite used to tax the engineering skill of the borough officials till at length, by a stupendous effort of genius, the difficulty was overcome. But the spirit of " Tom Fool's corner " does not seem to be laid; it has sprung up on the other side of the street, and laughs to scorn the knowledge of the nineteenth century when it is applied to find a means to run water under a culvert. There are now in the Hospital no less than twenty-six male patients, causing the wards to be crowded in a manner far from conducive to health. The tenders for the now wing will bo before the committee at their next meeting, and the amount of support the building fund appears likely to obtain will guide their decision as to the practicability of providing the further accommodation so badly needed. We trust our readers before then will have put_ down their names for such amounts as to justify the Committee in promptly proceeding with the work. Humanity apart, the question is

one affecting the health of the community, and cannot be lightly set aside. The Old Englibh Fair attracted a continuous flow of visitors yesterday afternoon and evening-, and every one seemed highly satisfied with what they saw. Amongst the many attractions to be found at the Fayre the May-pole dance is certainly the prettiest, and caused the liveliest interest. Pretty faces surmounting pretty dresses are always pleasant to look at, and when they are combined with graceful movement in the dance, as they were around the Maypole, young and old will press forward to watch the scene. This was particularly so last night, every point of vantage beine eagerly seized, and from the body of the Theatre the people seemed to be standing on top of each other. A more novel or elegant exhibition we have never had in Napier, and we trust that its promoters will be abundantly rewarded for the trouble and expense they must have been put to by the attainment of the laudable object they had in view in getting up the " Fayre." By the sale of tickets ar.d goods yesterday a sum of over £130 was collected. To-day the price of admission will be one shilling, and chidren half-price. Homoeopathy is the name given to a system of medical treatment introduced by Sir Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician, in 1796, and now extensively practised and having many adherents in every country and clime, amongst the number being not a few medical men of high distinction. The mode of treatment is extremely simple, and no home is complete without a Bupply of homoeopathic medicines. Country residents will find the largest stock in Hawke's Bay (by Marshall and other makers) of this invaluable remedy for nearly every ailment at Professor Moore's Medical Hall, Waipawa.—[Advt.] When the appetite languishes, and even the daintiest of delicacies fails to tempt, there is invariably some cause, apparent or latent, that produces the unnatural effect. To remove that cause a tonic is required, for the organ simply needs stimulation—an invigorant that will infuse a genial flow throughout the system and simultaneously brace the weakened functions. The cordial to do all this is Udolpho Wolfe's Schiedam Abomatic Schnapps.—[Advt.]
