WAIROA.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) October 19, 1882. As "your own" has been accused of spreading on a recent occasion false reports as to tbe state of the Wairoa bar, to the detriment of the p.s. Manaia, permit me to state that I am not interested in spreading any such reports. I seldom or ever mention the state of the bar, and always on the authority of the pilot— who ought to know beat. On the occasion in question he informed me that the Maori and Boojum could enter the river with safety, but that the Manaia could not. I therefore fail to ccc where the falsity comes in. Mr John Davis, (late of the Wairoa) has been appointed manager of the Canterbury Linseed Oil and Fibre Company. Mr Davis deserves this reward for his exertions in the Chrisitchurch district in pu«bing on the tbe flax industry. Wairoa is well off now for stud horses?. Locally we have Mr Thorp's Honest Tom and Robert the Devil, Mr Gemmell's Laird O' Stonebryes and Young Heather Jock, Mr Mayo's Pa papa, Mr McCulloch's Lord Elcho, St. Patrick, and Blair Athol, owned by Messrs Murtagh and Morris, of Napier, complete tbe list. The Guardian understands that Mr P. J. Murtagh is likely to become ODe of our settlers. He is looking for a small property, with the view of settling down amongst us. Mr Hill examined the Frasertown and Wairoa schools last week, and I understand that the children passed creditably in both. The Wairoa Jockey Club held its general meetinc at the Clyde Hotel on Saturday night, A. R. Duff, Esq., CO., in the chair. The annual subscription was fixed at one guinea, and entrance 10s 6d. Six new members were enrolled, and the following officers were elected : — President, A. R. Duff; judge, John Gemmell; starter, J. Powdreil; treasurer, Bank of New Zealand ; clerk of course, W. H. Peakman ; stewards, Messrs A. R. Duff, J. Gemmell, S. Thorpe, H. R. Duff, A. Getbio, T. Carroll, T. Powdreil, J. Powdreil, G. Bee, G. Taylor, W. H. Peakman, IT. F. Williams, W. Moloney, J. 11. Brown, A. Fraser, and F. Webb ; five to form a quorum. It was decided to hold the annual meeting on January 11th in Messrs Duff, Bros., Paeroa paddocks. The stewards were authorised to improve tbe accommodation for the public. Tbe balance-sheet was adopted; the receipts were £356 lis 7d, and the expenditure £256, leaving a balance on hand amounting to £100. The following programme was then drawn up : — Handicap Hurdles, 50 soys; Hack Hurdles, 10 soys ; Maiden Plate, 25 soys; County Stakes Handicap, 100 soys ; District Plate, 30 soys; Saddle Race (hacks only) ; Consolation Handicap, 15 eovs. This programme is a very fair one indeed, and I have uo doubt a good meeting will result. Mr A. Breuer, late of Napier, took over the Wairoa Hotel on Saturday fro_i Mr A. Poyzer.
