October 24. At an inquest held on the body of Jas. Alexander, a compositor at tbe Times office, who was found drowned on Saturday afternoon, a verdict was returned of " Found drowned." Mr Rolleston will address his constituents early next month. Mr Harris, ex-RUperintendent of the Fire Brigade, was presented with a handsome piece of plate and a purse of 100 soys. by tbe Insurance Association yesterday. On Sunday morning Mrs Maria Burgess, aged 59, wife of J. Burgess, Kaiapoi, was found dead in her bed. An inquest was held yesterday, when a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence was returned, "That death resulted from rupture of the heart." Tbe churchwarden of St. John's Anglican Church was charged yesterday with neglecting to license the parish schoolroom, in which it is customary to give entertainments. Counsel objected on his behalf that he was not the owner or occupier, as mentioned in tbe Corporations Act, and the R.M. dismissed the case. The secretary at a Temperance Lodge was fined £1 yesterday for neglecting to forward annual returns to the Registrar. The defendant pleaded that the previous secretary bad left the accounts in a confused state, from which they had not been extricated, but the R.M. was ruthless. The new Volunteer regulations appear on the whole to find Favor with the Volunteers of this city, but they are at present somewhat exercised in their minds as to what their future commander is to be. The late Colonel Packe's successor has not yet been appointed, and the men are anxious to know who is to take his place. In the Kaiapoi R.M. Court yesterday Mr P. Bain, surveyor, brought an action for the recovery of £30 against one J. Anderson. The plaintiff was engaged surveying and his theodolite was placed in the middle of a street, an_ during his temporary absence Anderson drove over the machine, irretrievably damaging it. Judgment was entered for the plaintiff with costs, the damaged instrument to be given to the defendant.
