THE MAN-OF-WAR WOLVERENE.
Referring to the the recent gift of the man-of-war 'Vl o3verene to the IS T ew South Wales Government, tho Sydney Town and Country Journal says : —" Mr W. J. Triekett, member for Woollahra, recently asked a question in tho Assembly with regard to the cost of taking over tho Wolverene, The answer, being voluminous, was given in the form of a return, the following items from which will doubtless be interesting : —For the passage to England of her officers and crew £5674: 19s was paid, which, with £155 10s 10d for mess property, made the total of what may be fairly called purchase of this ' gift' £5830 9s. The vessel is 20 years old, having been built in 1862, but she had her outer planking and copper renewed in 1876, and previous to being received by tlio Government of the colony was inspected by officials of the Naval Brigade and Marine Board. 'I he ship's company is now 58 with pay as follows : —1 commander, £600 per annum ; 1 lieutenant, £500 ; 1 engineer, £300 ; 1 gunner, £216; 1 boatswain, £216; 1 mastor-at-arms, clerk and schoolmaster, £200; 4 quarter-masters (each £100 10s), £402 ; 12 able seamen (each £91 ss), £1095 ; 1 carpenter, £127 15s ; 1 painter, £11812s 6d ; 1 leading stoker, £127 15s ; 4 stokers (eacli £109 10s), £438; 1 commander's servant, £73; 1 warrant officer's servant, £54 15s; 1 ship's steward, £185 10a ; 25 boys (each £9), £225. The total pay-sheet is £4748 17s 6d per annum, the cost to the colony £600 per month, fit which rate we have being paying since 20th January last. For this payment of nearly £5000 tho vessel has been outside the Heads under steam once, but the Naval Brigade have not been exercised in fcer at all.'
