WELLINGTON.
October 16
The town in full of rumors as to the injury Mr Lewis did to himself, but as his most intimate friends and medical advisers show a disinclination to disclose any information there ie, of course, a difficulty in ascer'aining to what extent he suffers. That he cut his throat appears to be generally admitted, and it is said that he also inflicted other injuries to himself, the nature of which, however, are not considered very serious as regards bis ultimate recovery. The young lady has received a most severe chock, being
almost in a comatose condition. The aftair has caused considerable excitement in the town.
It is understood that the reported breach of promise case will be defended. Damages are laid at £1000. The upread of measles in the city has had the effect of further diminishing the attendance at the public schools, and in three of them the rolls show that only one-half the usual number of children now put in an appearance.
The returns of the revenue for the colony for the six months ended September 30 are now complete, and prove to be extremely satisfactory. The revenue for the six months was as follows:—Customs, £741,748; stamps, £210,362 ; beer duty, £26,799; railways, £458,332 ; depasturing licenses, &c, £83,658; other receipts, £114,400; total, £1.635.299. The total expenditure during the earns period was £1,689,102. The amount under the heading of stamps includes postal and judicial revenues, also fees for I lands and deeds registry and other fees collected by stamps. The expenditure shown above is the true amount for the cix months, but as the Treasury accounts are closed on the last day of the quarter, the amount shown under receipts include only the moneys appearing in the revenue accounts received up to that date, and therefore do not show the amount received for the last week of the quarter. The amount received after the Treasury accounts were closed was for ordinary revenue £48,087, and adding the amount to the cum mentioned above ehowa the receipts to have been £1,683.386. The sum of £43,087 alone; with the £4855 received for land sales will be included in the accounts for the December quarter. On the side of recepts no mention is made of any sum due for property tax, the Government have decided to collect the whole amount on one date instead of in two instalments, an arrangement which it is believed will be more convenient to the general public. The date has not yet been fixed, but it is believed it will be in January next. In comparing the total revenue for the first six months of the half-year with the estimate for the same period half the amount of the property tax, which this year is estimated to reach £150,000, should be added to the actual receipts. Outside of the sum mentioned ia this account for expenditure the Govarnment intend to disburse the whole of the amount (£200,000) which they carried forward from the previous years, so that taking the half (£100,000) will show the additional expenditure. The amount received for land sales was £113,029, and that appearing for appropriations, annual and permanent, £84,023. The revenue for the quarter ending the 30th of September shows as follows: — Ordinary revenue—Customs, £421,321 Os 4d ; stamps, etc., £119,226 6s 8d ; land tax, £39 13s 3d : property tax, £3003 9a lid; beer duty, £13,273 17s 4d ; railways, £211,094 13s 10d; telegraphic, £22,109 18s; registration and other fees, £13,108 3s 8d ; marine, £3665 19s 4d ; miscellaneous, £16,814 16s sd; total, £824,640 18s 9d.
