Just as the steamer Wairarapa was about to leave Poverty Bay yesterday, Captain Perris arrived at Gisborne from the Southern Cross Petroleum Company's works, and reported that a considerable quantity of oil is exuding in the shaft, which is being casked every day. A 400-gallon tank has been filled with oil. This news has caused a more active demand for shares, and has naturally raised the hopes of shareholders.
A Maori caused considerable amusement at the exhibition in Mr Bryson'a shop last evening. His ticket entitled him to receive a gold-plated albert, and when the prize was handed to him his eyes fairly glistened with delight. Not one moment did he hesitate to view the attractions of the show, but, grasping the chain, he ejaculated " Kapai, gold, gold !" and darted straight for the door. His good fortune, however, induced him to return and buy sundry other tickets, amongst which was that for the silver watch. It is needless perhaps, to add, the watch and chain soon adorned the vest of our aboriginal friend, who wended his way homeward feeling convinced that he had done a good evening's work. There was another crowded attendance at the exhibition of views of the FrancoPrussian, &c, wars last night, when a number of new scenes were introduced. The usual liberal distribution of presents took place, gold, and silver watches, musical albums, plated alberts, cruets, jewellery, &c, being handed out in the most lavish manner. A matinee was held this afternoon, and was largely attended by children, each of whom received a gift. To-night there will be an entire change of scenery, and the leading presents will be one gold and silver watch, tea and coffee service, handsome musical album, accordian, &c. We are requested to mention that up till 8.30 the views are exhibited as seen by night, after that hour as by daylight.
There is no limitation to good. It penotrates all spheres, and pervades all dominions. Its power and its principles are simply diffusive. It is permeative and invasive, with peace for its missioa and healing on its wings. Not only is Udolpho Wolfe's Schiebam Aromatic Schnapps a staplo article of trade in tho United States, but it has a large sale, and enjoys a hig&
reputation in South America, Mexico, China, Cuba, and other countries. Like the principle of good, it has some embodiment everywhere.- -[Adyi.]
The name of Mr Van Resselburghe, of the Royal Observatory of Brussels, may yet rank with that of Edison. He has discovered that the ordinary telegraph wire can be used for telephonic transmission, and experiments have justified the accuracy of that discovery. In like manner the inventor of " Su_ar Worm Cakes for Children " has proved himself a benefactor of the whole human race, as thousands upon thousands of parents everywhere can testify. All orders should be addressed to Professor Moore, Medi2al Hall, Waipawa.—-[alvt.]
