Mr W. G. Motley reports that, owing to late-advices from Gisborne, there is now considerable enquiry for shares both in the Pout-hern Cross and South Pacific Petroleum Companies. He reports the transfer of over 1000 shares during the past week at satisfactory prices. There is at present a greater demand for Southern Cross, but it is anticipated that the visit of Mr Weaver to Sydney, whither he has gone to interview the directory, will have the effect of hardening prices for South Pacific. For Equitable Insurance shares a number of applications have already been received. The prospectus of the Auckland Native Lands Colonisation Company ha 3 reached Napier, and from the Dames on the directory confidence in the shares may be expected. He reports the following quotations : — Sales: Union Insurance, 20s; South Pacific Petroleum (promoters), 5s 6cl Buyers: Union Insurance, 19s 3d ; South British, 63s cum. div. ; National, 28s cum. div.; Accident, 43 9d ; New Zealand Drug, 24s 6d. Sellers : Union Insurance, 20s ; South British, 65s cum. div.; National, 28s 9d cum. div.; Colonial, 9s 9d ; Standard, 16s; New Zealand, 77s 6d ; Colonial Bank, 47s 6d ;' National, 80s ; New Zealand shipping, 97s 6d ; Westport Coal, 17s ; Guardian, Trust, and executors, 20s ; Napier Gas, £10 2s 6d ; new issue, 19s.

The bank rate of discount remains at 5 per cent, and the market rate at 4L The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of England is £10,000,000, a decrease of £100,000 as compared with last week's reserve. New Zealand securities remain at the following quotations :—Five per cent 10-40 loan, 104£ ; five per cent 1889 loan, 107; four and a half per cent 1879-1904 loan, 1014. Colonial breadstuff's are firm at 47s for Adelaide wheat, ex-warohouse, and 42s to 44s 6d for New Zealand wheat ,• Adelaide flour, ex store, 335. Australian tallow is firm at 44s Gd for best beef, and 47s for best mutton. Selected transparent kauri gum, £11 10s. Australian hides are in fair demand at full prices. Sydney, October 13. New Zealand wheat has declined Id per bushel, and is quoted to-day at 5s 3d ; New Zealand oats have further advanced 3d per bushel during the week, and are now worth 3s 9d ; maize, per bushel, 5s 7d ; sugar, Company's No. 1 pieces, per ton £35. Adelaide, October 13. Wheat is quoted at 6s ; prices, however, are nominal. Town flour, per ton, £14 5s to £14 10s, and country brands £13 ss. There is nothing doing in the freight market.
