MELBOURNE.

October 13

Captain Morya and Lieut. Darwin, a son of the deceased naturalist, leave here to-morrow for Queensland to make arrangements for observing the transit of Venus. Captain Tupman, who is expected to arrive shortly, is going to New Zealand for a similar purpose. The Boyal Commission appointed to inquire into the organisation and working of the Victorian police force has concluded its sittings. The commissioners in their report recommended that SubInspector Lamer and Superintendent Winch be called upon to resign their appointments. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, of Melbourne, announced that the opening sale of the season will be held on October 19. Great importance is attached to the event, owing to the expected attendance of a large number of foreign buyers greatly in excess of any previous year. The clip generally in Victoria and New South Wales is reported to be smaller than last year. Active competition is expected in the case of sound well-grown wools. It is anticipated that the total exports for the year will show a decrease of 50,000 bales. Queensland will, on the contrary, show a considerable increase compared with last year. The clip generally is of excellent quality. October 14. Owing to tbe prevailing dry weather and hot winds in Victoria a failure of the crops especially wheat, is feared.
