The steamer Wakatu, from Wellington, met with a serious mishap while entering tbe river this morning. She is alongside the wharf with her hold nearly full of water. She was signalled at 9 o'clock to take the bar, on which was 12 feet of water. ;A westerly breeze was blowing, with a moderate sea on. She crossed safely the mid-channel, but was carried on to some detached blocks at tbe end of the breakwater, knocking a bole in her waist on the starboard side. The engines were stopped to prevent breaking the blades of the propeller. By means of a staysail she slid off. The engines were started at full speed ahead, and she was beached on the hard, near the wharf, in eight feet of water. The extent of tbe damage cannot be ascertained until low tide. The cargo, which is now discharging, is considerably damaged, and also two mails. The vessel is insured for £4000 in the South British. She has a large general cargo, and a large number of passengers.
