Mr E. T. Conolly, M.H.R. for Picton, who has accepted the portfolio of Mioister of Justice, is one of the moat eminent lawyers in this colony. Some short time ago it was rumored that he had been offered a seat in the Cabinet, and then it was the Nelson Colonist hazarded the conjecture that this was a step " preparatory to conferring a judgeship upon Mr Conolly, who is in the front rank of his profession. Under the Disqualification Act he is not eligible for such an appointment, but, if he is appointed AttorneyGeneral, he will at once be so, there being an exception which enables any one holding that position to be appointed to the Supreme Court Bench." Perhaps not till tbe last moments of the Whitaker Ministry will the Premier offer the Attorney-Generalship to Mr Conolly, but by whatever cause it may be brought about the translation of the new Minister of Justice to the Judicial Bench will be received with general satisfaction.
