October 3. Mclntosh's hotel at Blacks was burnt down on Sunday. The loss is estimated at £1,200. The place was insured for £500 in the Colonial office. In the Supreme Court yesterday no true bill was found in the case of Thomas M'Gill, charged with arson in the Arcade. A true bill was found against Beattie, charged with the murder of his paramour near Oamaru. There are 37 witnesses in

the case. To-day John Mason and James Hartley, for robbery from the person, were sentenced to six months imprisonmeut each, and John Madden to three years. Mr Stout wished Mason's case reserved for the Appeal Court, as he contended that only a case of simple larceny had been made out, but Judge Williams held tbat there was sufficient evidence to support the indictment. In the case of the lads Williamson and Ahem, charged with burglariously entering several offices in town, the Crown's case rested entirely on the unsupported testimony of an accomplice, Jones, who yesterday pleaded guilty. The Judge directed the jury to acquit the prisoner*, which was done. The sheep assessment collected yeeterday at Dunedin for Otago, irrespective of Southland, was over £19,000. The totaliaator dispute at the Hunt Club Steeplechase meeting is after all to come before the Court, one of the six investors having sued for the dividend amongst the three, aa registered.
