THE JOCKEY CLUB'S SPRING RACE MEETING.

•The spring meeting of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club came off to-day at Hastings. The weather was dull but fine, with a light breeze blowing. There were about two thousand persons present on the course. The betting fraternity was fairly represented, and there were two totalisators, which latter did not appear to work very smoothly at first. The first event, the Hawke's Bay Guineas, brought out a field of seven horses, Kingask, Rangipo, and Te Ata being the favorites. The following are the results: — hawke's bat guineas, Of 10/5 soys., with a sweep of 5 soys. added ; for three-year-olds ; dietance, 1 mile. Mr Allan McLean's b g Kingask, Bst 101b 1 Mr G. P. Donnelly's b f Rangipo, Sst 51b 2 Mr 0. G. Smyth's br g Yankee, 88t 101b 3 A difficult start was effected, Yankee leading off in grand form, and maintaining hi? position for nearly half way round the course. Te Ata, who was rather refractory, ran oft the course at the start, and Carmen followed suit at the back of the course. Yankee, Kingaek, Kangipo, and Mahanga kept well together in the order named, with Laribaudiere, who was never in the race from the commencement, far behind. Coming into the straight Mahanga rushed forward, but was soon collard by KiDgask, who was in turn disposed of by Rangipo. An exciting race took place bet/veen the last named pair, Kingask winning by scarcely half a length. Yankee and Mabanga made a good third and fourth respectively. HANDICAP HURDLE EACE, Of- 60 soys.; distance about 2 miles. Mr W. Douglas , A.G., lOst 91b ... 1 Mr D. Page's Morning Star, list 31b 0 A field of five faced the starter. Romeo was scratched. A.G. led off, followed by Morning Star. Lone Hand came to grief at the first hurdle, and rolled over, throwing bis rider. Tartar missed the hurdle at the back of the course, leaving the race to MorniDg Star, A.G., and Ruabine, who ran in the order named. The second time round Ruahine ran behind the hurdle near the judge's box, tbue reducing the race to two competitors. Morning Star, who had the race apparently all his own way, fell at the last hurdle, the bit getting out of his mouth, and did not finish, A.G. coming in an

easy winner. Tartar, Lone Hand, and Morning Star were the favorites on the totalisator. SPRING HANDICAP, Of 200 Boys; second horse to receive 20 Boys. from the stakes; distance, 1£ miles. Mr P. Martin's b m Mavis, 6st Blb ... 1 Mr Allan McLean's eh m Louie, Bst 21b 2 Mr Allan M'Lean's br m Virginia Water, Bst 12 lbs 3 Seven horses etarted. Rangipo was scratched. After several false starts the flag fell, and Mavis sprang off with the lead, followed by Merlirj, all the other close up excepting Dan, who lagged behind. Opposite the grand stand Prim led, with Dan and Merlin together close up. At the back of the course the position was changed, Virginia Water coming- first, -with Louie well up, Dan, Merlin, Lone Hand, and Otupai following. Coming into the straight Louie and Virginia Water were together, Mavis being close behind. When near home the latter forged ahead and won a splendid race by about a head. Virginia Water was a good third. For this race Louie was first favorite in the totalisator.
