Under the heading " Echoes from the House," the New Zealand Times has the following :—"lt is now quite evident that the beginning of the end has come so far as the session is concerned, and before another fortnight has passed members will have returned to their homes. Some half dozen have packed up their traps and departed already, Sir George Grey being among the number. It ia not at all likely that the Knight of Kawau will ever take his seat in the House again. The generous gift of his valuable library to the people of Auckland was accepted by persons as a sign that Sir George meant to break up his home, and it is now generally understood that he intends to start for Great Britain in a few months. It is very doubtful whether he will ever return to the colony, and rumor even goes so far as to say that he hopes to find a larger field for the exercise of the talent which he undoubtedly possesses in the settlement of the great Irish difficulty. It will not be easy to fill the place that Sir George Grey has occupied in New Zealand politics, and there is no doubt that his departure will be regretted as much by bis political enemies as by his friends. His presence in the House has, of late years, been a source of strength to any Ministry to whom he was opposed, for while his personal following has always been too small to be dangerous, the bare prospect of his return to office has been sufficient to deter many hon. members from acting with him in any attempt to oust the Government. New Zealand can ill afford to spare a man of his culture and ability, but, all things considered, his retirement from the arena of colonial politics is, perhaps, more a matter for congratulation than regret."
