Wednesday. The Council met at 2.30 p.m. BILLS. The amendments made in the Law Practitioners Bill by the House of Representatives were agreed to. The Wellington Cemeteries was read a second time. LAND BILL. On the Land Act 1877 Amendment Bill being called on, to go into committee. Sir George Whitmore, in a long speech, said the bill should be put back till next session, and moved that it be read that day six months. After some further discussion the Council divided, and the bill was committed by 19 votes to 16. In clause 2 " the one-third area" was struck out on a division by 17 to 14. Mr Oliver, by way of compromise, accepted an amendment in clause 2 that '•one-fifth be the area of agricultural land to be opened up for sale." The clause wes then passed as amended by 12 to 9. In clause 13, on the motion of Captain Fraser, it was carried on a division that the area of lease should be 320 acres instead of 640 acres. In clause 27 Dr Pollen moved that progress be reported with leave to sit again, which was lost by 10 to 11. After some further discussion, Mr Oliver accepted a suggestion from Dr Pollen to report progress with leave to sit again, which was agreed to. BILLS. The Roads Construction Bill and the Crown and Native Lands Rating Bill were read a first time. The following bills were passed through committee, reported, and read a third time and passed :—Native Reserves Bill, Borough of Hamilton Boundaries Bill, Auckland Improvement Acts Amendment Bill, Tea Examination Bill, Auckland Railway Station Bill, and Patea Harbor Land Bill. The Council adjourned at midnight.
