September 5.J5 Tbe insurances on yesterday's fire are as folio we:— The building occupied by King, which is completely gutted, £500 in the Standard office; King's stock of furniturne, £1000 in the Standard office. Both these policies expired yesterday. Two billiard tables and some furniture belonging to Mrs Tribe, destroyed in the room over King's shop, £400 in the Transatlantic office ; the policy expires on September 9. Doherty, the tobacconist, lost £50, and is not insured. Mrs A. B. Thomson, the Armless Lady, who was proprietor of the Pig, estimates her loss, including tbe pig, at £500, and is not insured. King's and Hulbert's stocks were much damaged by removal, James Service, a butcher who accidentally cut bis thigh while killing pigs on August 11, died at the hospital yesterday. Mr Wilkinson, the actor, and two other men, who were arrested for taking part in the row over the closing of the theatre, were dismissed by the Bench yesterday. The magistrate said that the police were quite right to stop the disturbance, but it was evident they had captured the wrong men. A case of some importance to Municipal Councils was heard yesterday. A man named Baird set up in business as a scavenger in opposition to the one who held the regular contract from tbe City Council, and the latter Bought to restrain him. The Bench considered that section 47 of the Public Health Act was very clear on tbe point, and decided in favor of the Council, inflicting a nominal penalty. Fourteen applications were made to the licensing Committee of Christchurch South yesterday for 12 o'clock licenses, including three restaurant keepers who have had general licenses granted them. Seven applications were granted, but not any of those from restaurant keepers. Mr Barrett had his license given to him back, though there was some opposition. He has pulled down his old building, and is erecting a big three-storey hotel in its place, i>. fact which his counsel made a great point.
