WAIPAWA.
September 4. A fire took place at Waipawa late on Saturday night on the premises used by Dr Mirbach as a store-room for harness, saddles, etc. Tbe fire is supposed to be the work of an incendiary, as a quantity of rags saturated with kerosine was found under the building covered by a saddle. Before the fire was extinguished a saddle and a suit of clothes belonging to a boy residing on the premises were partially burned. Not long since Dr Mirbach's stable was burned down. Spite against the doctor is the supposed cause of the fire. The police have a clue as to who the incendiary is. At the Waipawa Magistrates' Court to-day, before Messrs A. St. C. Inglis and J. Lawrence, Justices, a youth of about 17 years named Ewart, an old offender, was charged by the police with larceny. Ewart lately came out of tbe Napier gaol, and had been loafing around Waipawa for some days. On Saturday evening last, taking advantage of a favorable opportunity, be entered the premises of Mr John Britten, butcher, and stole therefrom a rifle and coat. The rifle is the property of the Government. The Bench sentenced the prisoner to six months' imprisonment with hard labor in the Napier gaol.
