FREEZING OPERATIONS IN OTAGO
A practical start in freezing operations (says the Otago Daily Times) was made by the New Zealand Refrigerating Company at their work at Burnside on Tuesday last (Bth) in a rather unostentatious manner, the directors having made no arrangements to eecure the attendance of either the outside public or the shareholders. The directors present at the inauguration were Messrs A. C. Begg, John Roberts, Thomas Brydone, and W. C. Smith. Mr James Shand had the honor of supplying the first sheep to be frozen —viz., 150 crossbreds from his farm at West Tnieri, and of course they were in prime condition, the manager (Mr Forsyth) estimating their weight at an average of over 80lb each. The machinery was started at 11.30 a.m., and worked evenly from the first. -Althongh at the commencement the Company did not anticipate having to provide storage room for more than 4000 carcases, it was subsequently found that this •would be inadequate, and additional accommodation is being provided so as to enable 9000 carcases to be stored at a time. Fourteen men are employed at the works, and six butchers will be employed, it being anticipated that 300 sheep per day will be killed. It is intended to take sheep from the farms or runs of the shareholders, of whom there are 320, in preference to those of outsiders. The first shipments will be made by the steamer Marsala, which is expected to take 9000 carcases, and by (he ship by which 6500 carcases will be forwarded in December next. The directors are also in negotiation for a steamer, to arrive in November, capable of taking 9000 carcases. The offer made is at the rate of 2id pc , lb, but tho directors are asking 2§d, although the first offer was only The capital of the Company is £20,000, of which, one-half is called np.
