Yesterday was almost universally observed as a holiday in Christchurch. On the previous day over 12,000 persons travelled on the various Hues of tramway.' Yesterday the cricket match, Carisbrook (Dunedin) Club v. Ashley County was concluded. The Bcores were— Ashley, first innings, 195; Carisbrook, first 50, and second 112.

Christmas was chiefly celebrated here by all the men having a holiday. Many of tbe tents were decorated, and at night illuminated, which presented a very pleasing effect. The men behaved themselves well, and not a single case of insubordination or drunkenness has been reported. Two hundred men went out yesterday and destroyed about 150 acrea of Maori crops. About the same number of men have goue out again thia morning. It i 3 stated here that the Government have confiscated 60,000 acrea of laud as

indemnity for the cost of suppressing the recent proceedings.
