THE ASCENT OF TONGARIRO.
[To the Editor of the PaIIY Tkleguaph.] iSie,—Permit me to assure Mr Manson that 1839—not 1869-is the correct date of the year in which Mr Bidwell ascended Tongariro. Instruments for determining altitudes were not at that early day the portable things they are now. The safe carriage of the " mountain barometer " of those limes was a grave task in civilized countries even. Any attempt at its use that day in New Zealand would have been defeated, were if only through mere curiosity on the natives part. I mention this merely that Mr Mansoa Bhould not leave us with an impression on his mind that laches is attributable to Mr Bidwell. The "Arau caria Bidweliii " will, in botanical history, long preserve bis name with honor as a naturalist. While on the subject perhaps [ may add that Mr Bidwell wended bis steps to Australia, where he filled office as Commissioner of Crown Lands for the Wide Bay and Barnett district, dying very many years aso at his home near Maryborough, Wide Bay.—l am, &c, One Who Knew Him. December 23, 1881.
