CAPTAIN RUSSELL'S PRIZES.

[To tho Editor of the Daily Teleq-baph.l Sir, —Acting on your recommeudatioti, I attended at the Council Chamber to see tbe specimens of needlework by children attending the district schools, and fully agree with you that there is, some excellent work "done; the seating of tbe several pairs of troupers is decidedly excellent work; and Captain Russell d_ serves the thanks of tbe parents of the children for having brought about such results. With regard to the stocking darning I found that the stocking lor which the first prize was given was apparently a new article that had square boles cut out, and then darned in equares; certainly it looked very nice, but 1 fail to see the necessity tor such a proceeding as cutting holes in new stockings, and having had some experience in hosiery would, it allowed to express my opinion, say that decidedly the stockings which were mos-t deserving the prize were those darned where holes had been worn. This is the opinion of many others, as the articles shewed that more care had been taken to make an old stocking-foot resemble a new

one and comfortable to the wearer, which I think should have been cons dered by those judging. If, on the other hand, it was deemed advisable to distribute the prizes between Napier and Gisborne, why allow them to be competed tor here, as it tends to create dissatisfaction, and disheartens the competitors. Probably had there been a third person ro judge, the result would have been different.—l am, &c , Notingham. December 17, 1881.
