December 16

An attempt was made on Thursday morning to burn down a dwelling-house at Te Uwhi. A native shearer wbo was passing the house about 3 in the morning saw under one corner of tbe house a fire recently kindled. He aroused the inmates, and they succeeded in putting the fire out before it got much hold on the buildiDg. A quantity of burning material was pulled out from under the house, including ti-tree, scrub, and Dart of an old gown. Information was given to the police, and while Mr Shaw was away all trace of the fire was removed by some person unknown. No clue has yet transjpired as to the guilty/parties. Mr Shaw,' is not insured.
