TO THE ELECTOES OF WAIPAWA. /"\UR District is so large that I could not hope to meet any general representation of the Electors at the Declaration of the Poll at Waipawa, therefore, I adopt this means of conveying my sincere thanks to those who voted for me and gave mo their kind assistance in the last election, and I am glad to know that although defeated, I have had the support and retain the confidence of the great majority of the permanent settlers, —I also believe that the opinions I have advocated are generally concurred in by the thinking portion of the community, and will in the end be given effect to.—l am told, and believe, that my election could easily have been secured had I employed influences such as I regret to find the floating population now on our Electoral Roll is Influenced by, but I infinitely prefer defeat to a sacrifice of my own self-respect. Faithfully yours, J. D. ORMOND. TO THE ELEOTOBS OF HAWKE'S BAY. f*\ ENTLT3MEN,—Tbe issue of the late contest has, It 1 think, ehown that, in spite of any combinations, however powerful, that may be made, the electors will, when asked, record their opinions at the ballot box. I have asked you in that way to express your confidence in me, and you have clone It. Believing that I may consider that my action in the past has been approved by you, and that the principles I now advocate are in accordance with your views, I shall, to the best of my ability, continue In the course I have hitherto followed and deal with all questions in the way that I think will best conduce to the well being of the people. My warmest thanks I give to those friends who have so ably supported me in this contest, and I hope that my opponents will not fail to profit by the lessons of the past week. Again thanking you for once more returning me to such a responsible and honorable duty, I am, Gentlemen, Your Obedient Servant, F. SUTTON, M.H.R. for Hawke'a Bay. December 13,1881. TO THE ELECTORS, HAWKE'S BAY ELECTORAL DIsTkICT. rnHOUGH the result of the Poll has releg»ted me to private life, I hope still to serve you in positions almost as useful though less prominent and influential than that of Member for Hawke'a Bay, until the wheel of fortune tutns again and I on ca more win the support of a majority of j ou. I am told my defeat is mainly due to my errors of omission, so be it, I have striven that they might not be of commission. My most sincere thanks are due and offered to my many friends, who, believing in me, worked for me. My thanks also to those who believed in mo so firmly they thought it was unnecessary to work. To my opponents I say now as I said in my first address, that, as a result of my conduct of the con. test, although you opposed me politically, I hope but lew entertain other than kindly feelings for me personally.
