MR SHOFLICKER'S LESSON.
The Spaniards have a saying to the effect fhat if you do a man a favor he will never forgive you. Notwithstanding the singular adaptability of this axiom to this particular locality, Mr John Sholliuker, of Almneda, is convinced that there is no such a thing as even gratitude becoming too emphatic. The other morning a burly bub poverty-stricken individual tapped at MrS.'s door and represented himself as a retired prizefighter in distress. Being an admirer of the manly art, Mr Shofliclcer gave the stranger some money and treated him to a square lueul. After this the pugilist expressed himself as much refreshed, and volunteered to repay his benefactor's kindness by a lesson in boxing. He wag the ex-heavy-weight champion, he said, and would instruct Mr S. in the secret blow by which he won his battles. ,His entertainer was much pleased, and. tho pair immodiutoly
removed their coat 3 and vests and squared off. Mr Shoflicker further states that this is all he remombers, except he believes tho house fell on him then, or something. At all erents, ' when he came to his vest, coat, watch, and the ex-champion were gono, and he is now mouvning for Garfleld with both his eyes. He didn't learn the secret blow either.
