Mr Turnbull, one of the candidates for Timaru, expressed the following opinion of the Government and their prospects:
—"A more weak and imbecile Government had never sat upon the Ministerial Benches. They stuck to their seats like barnacles to a ship's bottom. Humble pie and dirt they had eaten by barrowloads, and stuck to their seats in spite of all. Tbey did not leave their seats when challenged by the Opposition, but sat there and ate the humble pie that was cast at them. Was he going to support such a Government? Decidedly not. There were men that far exceeded the Government in ability, and immediately the Address in Reply is read they will move such an amendment as will cast the Government in the background aud cover them with the ignominy they so well deserved. They had boasted they were Liberals, but could he forget when in the House in its most liberal spirit passed £75,000 for tbe relief of the unemployed that they locked it up so that they could come down the following session and say they had so much money in their bands, while at the same time they had driven the best man out of the colony."
