THE CATHOLIC VOTE.

[To the Editor of the Daily Telegraph.] Sift,—ln your issue of this evening you insert a letter signed " Catholic '"; but any Catholic will see at a glance that it was not written by a Catholic-; or, if so, by a weak-kneed one, who has forgotten all about his religion, or he would know that we are never ordered or instructed to give our vote to any candidate, nor eveu advised as to how we are to vote. Nor will I believe that Mr M'Sweeney ever put such a report in circulation ; in fact I am nearly certain of it, for T have often epoken to him on the coming contest, and be has never mentioned re-

ligion ia connectiin with it. I am aware, and so is Mr McSweeney, that a great many Catholics are going dead against him, in fact just as many as there are for him. If tbe writer of this letter thinks to do Mr McSweeney an injury by introducing religioue matter into this contest I think he will find himself mistaken, for when any right thinking person sees such lying and dastardly canards put up to try and injure a candidate, they will most likely go with the injured party. In conclusion, Sir, I think it is time snch low attempts to try and injure a candidate, and insult a whole community were put, a stop to by all respectable JDurnals refusing to print such rubbish as would lead any one to suppose that Catholics can be coerced in--to voting for anyone they do not tihnk the fie and proper man.—l am, &c , Another Catholic. Napier, December sth, 1881.
