Professor Eraser, it will be seen by advertisement, intends giving: a course of lectures on phrenology in the Protestant Hall, commencing on Monday next. We are requested to remind persons interested that nominations for all handicaps of the Boxing Day race meeting at Hastings close at 10 p.m. on Thursday, Bth instant, at Beecroft's Hotel, Hastings. The " oldest inhabitant " says that he does not remember such a season as the present since 1857, and he prognosticates that the present changeable weather will last to the first week in January. Bradshaw's Guide to New Zealand maintains its high reputation. The December number, which we have received from the local agent, J. W. Craig, is replete with every information that can be deeirei by a traveller. The District Executive, 1.0. G.T., have procured 1000 copies of the pamphletentitled the " Publicans' Claim to be compensated under Local Option," and are distributing them gratis to the electors. i Anyone not having received a copy can obtain one on application to the executive. In the Resident Magistrate's Court this morninar, before H. Eyre Kenny, Fag., R M., there was only one civil case, namely, E. W. Knowles v. H. Thomas, claim £47 10*., judgment was given for £47 10s 6d, with costs and counsel's fee. One case of drunkenness was dealt with in the usual manner. Mr Button received quite an ovation at Havelock last night. The Mechanics' Institute was crowded, large numbers being unable to get into the building , . The speech was'well received throughout, and when Mr Sntton drove off to his home he was heartily cheered by the electors waiting on the road. Messrs H. A. Banner and Henry Williams, together with Mies Williams, and a son of Mr Nat Williams, arrived at Adelaide last Sunday in the steamer Orient after a run of 36 days from Plymouth. These well known Napier residenis will probably arrive here on Saturday week by the Rotomahana, which vessel leaves Melbourne to-day. The life-belts hanging up at the police station are not likely to be called into requisition as long as they are kept there. If Constable Pickering or Mr Crossman had had to run to the police station for lifesaving apparatus those two little children mentioned by us yesterday, would have been drowned. The Court House verandah is the "best place for one of the life-belts and ropes, and a shed should be erected at the Bluff bathing place for the reception of the other. " Elector" writes as follows: —" Captain Eussellfhas boasted that he does not ask for votes, but is it not a fact that he commenced by getting , the employers to put their employed on the roll under the impression the men would vote as their masters told them ? Finding he had made a mistake, did not Captain Russell then become quite too suddenly awfully affable ? and when that did not go down, lo! circulars have been pent to every elector. Surely that is asking for votes; but then, as the gallant Captain says, ' there's a deal of humbug in politics.'" During election times newspaper offices get flooded with correspondence, and it becomes impossible to publish a tithe of the letters that are received. Very many correspondents seem to think that a newspaper is labelled " rubbish may be shot here," and so whatever first comes into their heads they scribble off and address to the editor. We have at present a large stock on hand of rejected contributions. " Tommy Dodd," "A. G.," " Kaipanga," " Stockwhip," " Outetation Shepherd," all declined with thanks. The Municipal Public Works Committee sat last night, when the following recommendations were agreed to : —l. That tenders be invited for the following services for the year ending 31st December, 1882 : — Carting, removal of nightsoil and rubbish ; printing and advertising; fuel; blacksmith's work. 2. That all persona residing , within one hundred yards of any water main who can be but who are not pupplied with water be charged a rate equal to onehalf of the ordinary rate. 4. That vouchers for expenditure for November be passed and ordered to be paid. The bullet on the battle-field is swift in dealing out death, but sickness is almost as certain, if slower, in decimating the ranks of the soldiery. Exposure, fatiguing marches, sudden checks of perspiration, changes of water, illy prepared food, and a multiplicity of other causes, swell the roll of casualties, all of which can be materially avoidad by the use of Udolpho Wolfe's Schiedam Aeomatio Schnapps, the great invigorating cordial for the system.— [Advt.] To-night Mr M'Sweeney meets the electors of Napier at the Theatre Royal, and Capfc. Russell the electors of Hawke's Bay at Petane. Meeting of the united temperance organisations to-night at 6.30. The audited accounts of the Hawke's Bay County Council are published.
