THE WITTY ANSWER.

[To the Etjitoe of the Dailt Telegeapb..! Sir,—l am not one of those who meddle with politic?, but I should be obliged if you would insert tbe following in your valuable paper. I intend merely to interpret a sentence. As you are well aware the topic of conversation just now in town is all on the candidates for Parliamentary honors, and on their "professions de foi." Last Saturday I was, like everybody else, gossiping and talking upon the speeches made by Messrs McDougall and Buchanpn, when I was told thrice by different • ,rsons that Mr Buchanan had made ? • witty answer " to Mr Monteith when \..e latter asked Mr Buchanan at tbe Theatre Royal " Why he had not addressed the Napier electors sooner, so that, if the electors did not like his political opinions, they would have had time to look for another candidate ?'' to which Mr Buchanan replied candidly " that he would have been very foolish to do so, and give thus a chance to a third opponent." Very 'good indeed !! I venture, Sir, to interpret this answer as follows : " In the election contest I have not to see whether my political views agree with those of the electors of Napier, but the best way to go to the poll, for by so doing I shall have more chance with two opponents than with three, as my aim is to be returned as a member first; the interests of my constituents are a secondary consideration, of course!!—l am, &c, Interpreter.
