CHRISTCHURCH.
December 3,
Tbe Bishop of Nelson published in the Times yesterday morning a series of telegrams between the Hon. F. Rolleston and himself. Mr Rolleston asks the Bishop whether it is correct, as reported, that the Bishop had eaid to several people that the Government's treatment of the natives had been actuated by political consideration with a view to influencing the elections. The Bishop replied that the statement, whether made or not, appeared to him evident and harmless, but he protested against the Government requiring of him an account of private conversation. Mr Rolleston, in answer, said he had not required anything of the kind, but merely wished to ascertain whether the statement, which imputed such disgraceful conduct to the Government, was true. In the Times it is stated that the Bishop did not make use of his position to propa gate the views attributed to him.
