The most charitable thing that we can do is to say as little as possible about Mr McDougall's address. From first to last Mr McDoucall utterly failed to show that he possessed any claim to the position ho has chosen to assume. In his self-defence, on the charge of treachery to his party, he showed a reckless disregard of the honor that is said even to bind the members of a certain profession together, and he appeared to think that, in blackening the character of others, he exhibited himself as a paragon of virtue. Why Mr McDougall should have gone to the trouble of inviting the public to sit round the tub while he washed his dirty lioen is more than we can say. Mr McDougall's political character may be of consideration to himself, but it can be of no concern whatever to the electors of this constituency. A man who can unblushingly tell the people that he went touting around the different newspaper offices for a job on the literary staff, careless as to the political creeds of those from whom he sought employment, announces himself as one who is ready to serve any master, or work for any party, for pay. Mr McDougall has shown himself to be ready to jump en either side of a fence, and as that is apparently his only qualification for a seat in Parliament we trust the electors will be too sensible to put him in a position to chow his agility.

We remind members of the Rifle Volunteers of their parade and skirmishing drill, with blank cartridge, this evening. The vital statistics for the§ district; of Napier for the month of November last show births 42, marriages 4, and deaths 16 The crack yacht Buttercup was beaten yesterday in a trial spin with Mr F. Weber's new boat which has just arrived from Auckland. Mr M'Dougall announces his intention to again address the electors of Napier on Thursday, Bth instant, at 7.30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the open in Clive Square. The Hospital returns for the month of November were as follow .—ln Hospital at last date, 10 males, and 8 females; admitted during the month, 21 males and 7 females; discharged, 15 males, and 7 females ; remaining, 16 males and 8 females. Some mischievously disposed idiot last night, during Mr McDougall's meeting, endeavored to turn the gas off at the meter, and partially succeeded in putting the Theatre in darkness. When the Theatre is occupied for political purposes some means should be adopted to secure the gas against its being tampered with by senseless individuals. The yield of wool throughout this provincial district this shearing will, probably, give a higher average than has yet been known. As one of many instances of the excellent clips obtained, we may mention that a small flock of 250 Lincolns, mixed ages and sexes, belonging to Mr F. H. Drower, clipped more than one ton of wool, or an average of lOJlbs. per head. The principal feature of Mr M'Dougall's political views is the wonderful similarity they bear to those expressed by Mr W. 0. Smith at Waipawa. Many parts of Mr M'Dougall's address were couched in almost the identical language employed by Mr Smith. On the principle that two heads are better than one, perhaps, these two candidates assisted each other in their political studies. It is noteworthy that Mr Buchanan was proposed to-day as a fit and proper person to represent this constituency by Mr Eobjohns, who has very large interests in public-houses, and was seconded by Mr Troy, who is the biggest teetotaller in the town. And somebody points out that it was most appropriate that a popular auctioner should have proposed Mr McDougall, who, apparently has not been above offering himself for sale. Councillor Monteith has given notice of motion that he will move as follows: — " That, with reference to the letter from the Hon. the Colonial Secretary, requesting the Corporation to remove from the offices they at present occupy, this Council use every endeavors to induce the General Government to hand over to them the block of buildings known as the old Provincial buildings, together with the land they actually occupy, as a reserve for the Borough of Napier." In the District Court this morning, on the application of Mr Lee, A. C. Riggs was granted his order of dipeharge, the required books having been produced. Stuart v. Ruck, Mr Lascelles for plaintiff ; no defence had been filed ; judgment for plaintiff for £143 18s, and costs and counsel's £7 3s, and coets of Court £2 3s, total £153 4s. In the matter of W. H. Simpson, of Havelock, Mr Sainsbury, for the petitioners, Mr Lascelles for the debtor; Mr Sainsbury applied for an adjournment, which was granted, the date being fixed for December 8. Testimonials are a prolific source of scepticism. The world has been so often humbugged by unauthentic certificates that it is hard for it to attach credence to what it reads. The true merit of any article is self-affirmative, and its highest endorsement, its own self-asserting virtues. The cures consummated by TJdolph Wolfe's Schiedam Akomatic Schnapps tell their own story, and plead their own cause. Messrs H.
