MR SUTTON AT TE AUTE.
Mr Sutton addressed a crowded meeting afc the lion If. R. Russell's woolshed, Te Aute, last night, Mr J. Walker occupying the chair. Mr Sutfcon repeated many of the arguments ho used afc previous meetings in reference to taxation. He expressed his opinion that the introduction of the Bible in schools would not assist the cause of education, bub would o]3pose ib. He strongly advocated the alteration of the law in reference to native land, and would simplify the process of dealing with them. He thought the principle of Mr Bryce's Land Bill of 1880 particularly suitable to districts like Te Aute, as ifc would have assisted settlers to obtain land in such areas as suited their requirements, and the natives would have obtained a larger price than they can get now. Mr Sutton spoke for nearly two hours, the audience expressing unmisfcakeably their satisfaction with the speech. t«everal questions in reference to education, collection of clog tax from natives, and other matters of local interest having been answered, Mr Robinson proposed, and Mr Wilson seconded, a cordial vote of thanks to Mr Sutton for his address. Mr Oxenham, amidst much applause, moved as an amendment a vote of thanks and entire confidence, but afc Mr Sutton's request the amendment was withdrawn, Mr Sutton expressing the wish that he might receive a proof of their confidence on Friday week.
