STRANDING OF THE STEAMER PENGUIN.
(by telegraph.)
Wellington, November 18. The steamer Penguin is ashore at the French Pass. The Wallace is standing by her, and her position is not considered dangerous. Nelson, November 18. The 8.8. Hawea arrived in the French Pass at 2 o'clock this morning, and found the Penguin jammed in one of the swash ■ways on the banks in the reef. She lays about two of her owu lengths from the beacon at Pass Point. At her bows * there is seventeen feet of water, and aft eighteen feet. At low water she is straight through the reef, and is fixed by the rocks on both sides about abreast of the main mast. The tide runs both ebb and flow straight with her. Part of the propeller was three feet dry at high water. She has laid one tide, and has not strained. At 5.40, when the Hawea left, she had made no water. The "Wallace is still alongside, but on account / of the strength of the tide very little 1 time is left for work. She is expected to be got off when the tide next makes.
