Mr Shanks, the late member, has retired from the contest for the Mataura seat. Mr RicbardsoD and Captain McKenzie, at Mataura, last night received a vote of confidence. The former said that, if be was in the Assembly last year, he should have supported Mr Hall. The Campbelltown (Bluff) township was flooded last night. There was extraordinarily heavy rain, and the water was three feet deep in some places. The Mataura electoral roll has 1500 names on it. An analysis of the Invercargill elector?l roll shows freehold claims 9108, and residential 855.
