The Lydia Howarde Company will perform in theschool-room at Clive to-night.

In consequenq-3 of the prevalence of carlatina tbe Waipukurau Hospital has been closed to visitors.

At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning a native was charged with being drunk, and fined 5.*, or the usual alternative.

The mayor has received a telegram to the effect that Mr Goodall tbe engineer to the Timaru harbor v. orks will be in Napier on the 19th instant, in response to the invitation sent to him to report on a breakwater at tbe bluff,

A. prodigious effort was made to pack the hall at Waipawa with the Smith party list night in order to defeat a motion of confidence in "Mr Ormoud, but, in spite of every thing that was tried, the motion was carried amidst the greatest excitement.

Later intelligence from Kopua states that Messrs Wilding and Bull's paw-mill is in great danger from the burning sawdust, and that nothing can be done to smother the flames, which are running all over the surface of the immense accumulation.

A correspondent " Nimrod " suggests to the electors of Napier the advisability of nominating Sir Julius Vogel for the representation of this constituency, since that gentleman is en route for this colony from England. As far as we can learn there is no foundation for the report that Sir Julius Vogel is on his way out to NewZealand.

The Union Co.'s s.s. Rotomahana left Wellington at 7.40 p.m. yesterday, and arrived in the roadstead at noon to-day. She haß a large cargo to discharge, including a thoroughbred bull for Mr McHardy, and a number of valuable sheep for Mr Tanner. A large number of through passengers availed themselves of the stay, and visited the town. This would be considerably augmented if we had a breakwater or wharf that large steamers could lie alongside.

The recent rise in tbe price of kauri timber in Auckland will no doubt give ripe to a corresponding advance in that article in Napier, and should give an impetus to the sawmills in this district, as kauri timber will not be used so much if it is higher than it bas been, whilst tbe local timber can be delivered at a much lower rate. The following- is an extract from a recent issue of tbe New Zealan.l Herald :—Uwing to a scarcity of logs at, most of the mills, especially on the East Coast, and the brisk., demand for timber, both locally and in Australia, prices have advanced. The Union Sash and Door Company is quoting 15s for the first-class and 10s for second-class kauri at the yards.

Important news bas been received from Taranaki by which it is .learnt that the natives are desirous of opening up the Mokau country to the north of New Plymouth. All the principal chiefs of the district have signified their desire to the Government to have a sitting of the Native Lands Court there without delay. In reply to Mr Kelly they stated.that the natives were all agreed in this matter, and that the celebrated chief Rewi bad given his hearty approval to tbe movement. It may be accepted, we think, that the wish of the natives to open up the Mokau is an undoubted indication of the growth of a general feeling on tbe part of the King Maoris to abandon their isolation.

Nearly all the gentlemen who were at the meeting yesterday week again attended last night at'the office of Messrs Banner and Liddle to consider the reply of Mr Goodall, C.tf., offering to visit Napier and report on the feasibility of constructing a breakwater at tbe Ahuriri bluff. The meetin-: authorised Messrs Vautier, Neal, and Liddle, to send a telegram to Mr cJoodall, and to state that the sum named by him would be paid for his visit and report. Over £80 were subscribed in tbe room, and this sum will, no doubt, be supplemented by our merchants and tradespeople to obtain this other report, which, if endorsing that of Mr McGregor, C.8., will be worth having, and it is lobe hoped will lead to same strenuous efforts being made to secure to Napier something more than the excuse we now have for a harbour.

We again remind our readers that the Pomeroy Company open at the Theatre Eoyal to-night in Shakespeares great comedy « Twelfth Night." The choice of this play for an opening night is a judicious one. There is no Shakespearian comedy which affords more ample soope for the

display of tbe powers of a good company than the one which sets forth the loves of On*ino for Olivia, of Viola for Orsino, and of the ill-fated conceited feeling for Olivia which Malvolio called love; There is a rich vein of subtle humour running all through one of the most ingeniously constructed plots to be found in Engli-h comedy. From tbe notices given to the Pomeroy Company by the press in Ausstralia and the South Island we feel assured that full justice will be done to this admirable piaj.

To be forwarned is to be forearmed, says the aphorism, and the weapon that best serves the purpose of a protective aegis against nervous ailments, kidney diseases, dyspeptic tendencies, physical languor, nausea, or loss of appetite, is "Odolpho Wolfe's Sghiedam: Aeomatic? Schnapps. Stamped with the signet seal of medical approval, it can be infallibly trusted and honored with the award of popular opinion, it can be. confidently commanded to universal use.
