WAIROA.

(from our own correspondents.; November 5, 1881.

The Rev. Father Sauazeau is here oil a visit, chiefly, I believe, with the .object of making arrangements to go on with, the building of the Catholic Church in the town at as early a date as possible. A soiree in aid of the funds is, I hear, to be held next week.

The Lydia Howarde troupe has taken its departure; at least a part of. it has sought " fresh fields and pastures new." "Birds in their little nests agree," but theatrical companies do not always act on the same principle as their feathered friends. The result is that two of the troupe—Miss Jennie Nye and Mr Fisher —remain here and play to-night and Monday night. The Council elections are now beginning to engross public attention. I hear on good authority that Mr Bee will not contest Waikaremoana ; there will be four other candidates, though, one of them being the Jernjman at Mohaka—a half-caste residing at Mohaka. Of his qualifications to assist the " collective wisdom " of the Council I cannot speak. He handles a boat and an eel-spear well, that is all I know. Two candidates are out for Waikaremoana, and four for the Clyde riding. The soiree and concert in aid of St. George's Church at Mohaka, to which I recently alluded, came off on Friday last, . and was an unqualified success. The attendance was good, and tboee present seemed to do full justice to the viands laid before them' (Mohaka ladies are proverbial ior their, liberality). The concert, which came off afterwards, was partly sacred and partly ; sentimental. Everything indeed passed off very well. Our Harbor Board will meet at 2 p.m. on Monday next. "to consider special business." In common with .a good many of tbe residents, I wish the members could manage to exorcise the blanked bar we've eot here.
