CHRISTCHURCH.

November 7. Two hundred and fifty entries have been received for the dog show. Last night Madame Lottie Wilmot, being refused the use of the Papanui Town Hall, which she had hired for a lecture, assaulted the Secretary of the Town Hall Company with a supplejack. On Saturday night a meeting was held at Leeston to consider tbe advisability of bringing forward a candidate to oppose the Hon. John Hall. Mr John Rennie, a local farmer, is spoken of as the candidate.

A male infant three months old was found deserted yesterday near the Catholic Church. There are 87 candidates for the University examination commencing on November 14. Of these 68 are for the B. A. degree, two for the M. A„ five for the L. L. D., and five for the L. D. Seventy names have already been received for the matriculation examination next month. A correspondent writing to the Times this morning suggests that a Te Whiti defence fund be organised, and promises to subscribe. Mr O. Gr. Stead, now in England, has purchased nine thoroughbred mares, and one yearling colt, and has shipped them for Lyttelton. (For continuation of news see fourthpage.')
