WAIROA.

November 1. The County Council meets on the 9th November.

The bar is still in a bad state. The river is backing up behind, and the natives talk of cutting an entrance to save flooding their plantations. Mr H. Flint, hotelkeeper, and one of the Lydia Howarde troupe, had a narrow escape from drowning yesterday. Both rode down to the heads in the afternoon on to the shingle spit, where the water was flowing out to sea. They rode too close to the edge of the sand bank, and were both washed off their horses into the river. The actor held on to the stirrup, and his horse pulled bim out, but Mr Flint got stuck in the shifting sand, and was with difficulty pulled out by the Rev. Mr Hill, who saw the occurrence from the flagstaff. ♦ (_*r_o*_ UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.j
