October 26. At the Police Court to-day, Mr Thorp, late teller of the Bank of Victoria, was brought up on remand charged with the embezzlement of £2500. It was stated in evidence that the prisoner justified the robbery, and declared that Mr Shaun, the manager, took cash and substituted a cheque for it. Goldeborougb's mammoth wool sales, which opened on the 12th, were closed to-day. During the series 16,000 bales were offered, and 10,500 sold. Large purchases were made for America and the Continent. Prices for greasy ruled from 7d to Is 3£ per lb. The debate on Mr Ramsay's amended motion was resumed in the Assembly this afternoon, and it is still proceeding. The debate on Mr Ramsay's motion was continued to a late hour in the Legislative Assembly last night, and was finally adjourned to to-day. Thorpe hae been committed for trial on the charge of embezzling £2500 from the IBank of Victoria. No further information has been received regarding the missing steamer Balclutha. It is now known that there were twenty-two souls on board when she sailed from Melbourne for Sydney. Telegrams to hand from Freemantle, Western Australia report that a Fenian scare has been occasioned there by the appearance of armed boats off the coast. Tbey made off when seen, and the police are now searching for the intruders. Later intelligence from Freemantle states that only one boat's crew has been seen on the coast, and not several armed boats as at first reported.
