LONDON.

October 21. A Gazette issued yesterday announces that her Majesty has conferred tbe Companionship of the Order of tit. Michael and St. George upon Mr J. Cashell i Hoey, Secretary to the Agent-General for Victoria in London, and upon Mr J. B. Were, and Mr J. 0. Newberry, of Melbourne. The Dutch steamship Koning Der Nederlanden, 2083 tons, encountered a heavy gale on her voyage from Batavia to Amsterdam, and broke her main shaft. Efforts were made to put her under sail, but she proved unmanagable, and foundered shortly afterwards. Thirtyeight of the passengers and crew saved themselves by the boats, and have reached land safely, but one hundred and seventyfive who also left the ship in boats are still missing. October 22. The homeward Australian and New Zealand maijs, which left Auckland on September 13 via San Francisco, were delivered here to-day. News is to band to-day from Ireland that, in consequence of the Viceroy's recent proclamation declaring the Land League to be an illegal association, the offices of the organisation in Dublin have been closed, and tbat at the same time a manifesto has been issued by the League leaders advising its adherents to maintain a firm attitude, and at the same time to continue passive resistance to the measures of the Government. The manifesto further announces that all public meetings under the League's auspices will be temporarily abandoned. Reports to hand from Ireland show tbat the strong measures which have been adopted by the Executive are having a salutory effect. The condition of the country is much calmer, and order prevails in the "disturbed" districts,

The priests generally in Ireland endorse the terms of the letter recently written by the Archbishop ot Caohel condemning the League's manifesto exhorting the tenants to refuse to pay rents.
