VICTORIA.
A message from the Assembly was read in the Council on the 12th to the effect that the salaries would be henceforth paid to the President and Chairman of Committees without being subject to the Lower House. It was announced in the Assembly that a bill would shortly be introduced limiting the work time of the engine drivers on the railway lines to eight hours daily. The subscriptions received within three weeks after Bishop Moorhouse's appeal on behalf of the Cathedral fund amounted to £20,000. A number of gentlemen interested in agriculture have offered to lease from the Government 4000 acres, and have purchased 600 more, comprising the Dookie farm, for the purpose of establishing an Agricultural College. It is proposed to expend from £20,000 to £50,000 on the venture, and the college is expected to be self-supporting.
