WAIROA.

(FROM OCR OWN COMESPOJtDMWT.)

October 11, 1881.

Monday next will be the anniversary of the opening of the Bank of New Zealand, and the day will be observed as a special bank holiday. Why? Will the manager give all bis clients a pic-nic; will be take the interest off "that little trifle of an over draft P" Something worthy-of the great financial establishment should be done.

No less than seven entires are already announced to stand this season in different parts of the county. Among them are Laird O'Stonebyres and Ynunsf Heather Jock by Mr Gemmell, Marquis of Lome and Young Champion by Mr J. Sim, jun., of Mobaka, Robert the Devil and Honest Tom by Mr Stephen Thorpe, Tusessa, and Pa papa by Mr George Mayo. Mr Thorpe offers a cup value twenty guineas to be run for under the auspices of the County Jockey Club "by two and three-year-olds, the produce of Robert the Devil.

Mr Allan M'Donald " came, saw, and conquered " the electors at Mob ska on Saturday eight, obtaining a vote of confidence by a majority of 29. The speech was merely a repetition of his Wairoa utterances, of which I wired you" full particulars. I may mention here that Mr M.Donalds speech at Mohaka was prefaced by an overture on the pianoforte performed by Mr Whight. Had it been an inspiriting tune on the bagpipes, or the Reel o' Tulloghorum by Mr M'Donald and his supporters, I could understand the Scotchmen being carried away. The telegram read at Mr M'Donald'a meeting from the Premier has done the former gentleman a great deal of good, and Mr Locke's people and cause no end of harm. Taken in its very best light the Premier has lowered himself considerably in the eyes of the electors, who don't require the Hon. John Hall to tell them who they should or should not support. " Little Benjamin's land"—the greedy, all devouring Province of Taranaki—the absorber of the unemployed, and the diminisher ot the colonial money cheßt, has great friends and backers among the Armed Constabulary who served on the West Coast at one time. Speaking to one of that ilk the other day I deplored the fact that the demands of Taranaki should prevent our worthy Constabulary from having a good road to the Lake. " Oh," replied he, " I've land there, and the more money they spend there the better for me." What with the " military Treasurer" and the " foorce" we unfortunates stand no show against Taranaki.

You will remember that I referred some time ago to the case of pig-trespass at Waikaremoana, and noted the hardship of the settlers in not being able to destroy these pigs. The Chairman of the County Council wrote to the Government suggesting that the Cattle Trespass and Impounding Act (Hawke's Bay) should be proclaimed as in force in the Auckland Province. Needless to say the Governor declined, as no such proclamation could make any Provincial enactment legal in another Province.
