Berry, the local superintendent, who is at present in Napier, informs us that the work of prospeoting in still going on with jjrood results ; the well is now down nearly 300 feet, and the oil and gas is so strong at times that the present boring tools are often driven up the pipe. As soon as the new Bin. tubing arrives a permanent well will be put down, when, there is not the slightest doubt of securing a regular flow of oil. The paraffin lead has been followed for some distance, and it is now known that great quantities abound. Mr Berry wishes us to state for the benefit of the Napier shareholders that he received a cablegram from Sydney informing him that the scrip which had been so long delayed has been forwarded through the Gisborne office for distribution.

There was a capital attendance at the Theatre last night when' Fra Piavolo' was repeated to the evident satisfaction of the audience, there being numerous encores. It was followed by the favorite burlesque of "Aladdin," whioh was played through with great spirit. The well-known duet " I've wandered in Dreams " was charmingly rendered by Miss Howarde and Mixs Jennie Nye, the former taking - the part of Aladdin, and the latter that of the Princess. Mr Harry Power kept the houße in roars of laughter by his eccentricities as Widow Twankay. To-night is to be for the benefit of v "isseH Howarde and Nye. lecture on " What the rocks tell u« " wa-< delivered in the new Church, vhakew-peii'i'-road, la*teve< intr, by H. Hill, Esq. There was a fair attendance. Mr W. Harker, who was by the chair, in. a humorous speech, briefly introduced the lecturer, saying that in the time the great " hill" in front of them was thoroughly opened up the andience would no doubt have a better insight into what the rooks had to tell them. Mr Hill commenced by referring l to the relative proportions of the land and water surface of the earth, the water being' a force active in nature, the land passive. He then alluded at Rome lenjrth to the destructive properties of water, whioh had destroyed ehinirle beds, sand beds, &c; Fire and animal and vegetable life were the constructive activities, whilst water was the destructive activity. If the knowledge obtainable of the various activities now in operation and whioh properly came under the domain of physical geography, were applied to the pant life of the globe, it would be found that amongst all kinds of rocks on the o»rth's surface, from the oldest to the youngest, there were similar evidences of destructive and constructive agencies. At the conolusiou of the lecture the chairman moved a vote of thanki to Mr Hill, although he thought the audience could hardly pay a higher compliment than by the attention they had given the lecturer. He oonfirmed, by hix personal observation, the immense mineral wealth situate in the Ruahine range, whioh was capable of supporing an immense population. The meeting then concluded with a vote of thanks to the chairman, whioh was carried with acclamation.
